Swystun, Lunette

November 7, 2023

Lunette Swystun

With great sadness and profound love, we announce the death of Lunette Swystun (nee Gibson), age 71, late of Regina (formerly of Pense) Saskatchewan on November 7, 2023. A friend to everyone, her enthusiasm and joy will be missed more than words can explain.

Lunette passed just days after her 50th wedding anniversary with the love of her life, Brian Swystun. Lunette loved the things Brian built for her, especially the garden bower where they spent many hours having coffee together talking about life and throwing the ball for their beloved and devoted dog Lila. Together, Brian and Lunette cruised all around the world to places like Alaska, Central and South America, Antarctica, and Australia. Lunette was never afraid to chat with strangers, and they have stories of time spent with new friends from all over the world.

Lunette leaves behind two loving children Laura Swystun-Doan (Jason Doan) and Michael Swystun (Jennifer Carpenter). Lunette’s devotion for her children shaped them into wonderful, loving people and they enjoyed spending time with her-- making giant batches of perogies, going out birthday and Christmas shopping, learning about plants and gardening, and taking grandchildren to the playground. A highlight every year was decorating the Christmas tree on Lunette’s December 14th birthday.

Lunette had fantastic relationships with her grandchildren Sarah Doan and Theo Swystun. She shared her love of playing cards, gardening, and baking with Sarah and together they had sleepovers, played dress up, and did countless crafts. Grandma made Sarah many Christmas pajama’s and first day of school clothes. Theo loved his grandma and playing with all the dinosaurs when he visited. Somehow, she knew all the best toys and Theo has spent many hours scooting around the house and yard on Grandma Nette’s Motorbike. Lunette always shared her tremendous love with extended family, nieces, nephews, and their children, hosting messy adventures like the huge annual gingerbread house party. Lunette loved sewing and made many beautiful quilts for the family including every child, grandchild, niece, nephew, grandniece and grandnephew.

For 35 years, Lunette worked as an Audiometric Technician with the Saskatchewan Hearing Aid Plan. In a career of service, she shared her joy and exuberance for life with her coworkers and clients, many of whom became lifelong friends. That same energy and exuberance meant Lunette was a born volunteer. She spent countless hours supporting the Pense fowl suppers, fashion shows, dinner theatres, rink fundraisers, etc, etc, etc!

Lunette loved being in the garden. She started the season with hundreds of plants in her sanctuary (greenhouse) that Brian built for her, as it was the only warm place to be in a cold Saskatchewan spring. With a hundred pots scattered around the yard, when asked she would humorously admit she could only see ten. As the season warmed, she spent countless hours moving plants to her fairy garden, Alice garden, fish pond and vegetable gardens. Lunette was proud to share her beautiful space with the secret garden tour. As with everything she did, Lunette wanted to share and bring joy to everyone she met.

A Celebration of Life is planned for the Spring of 2024 when the flowers are blooming. We thank all those nurses, doctors, health care aids, family and friends that helped Lunette on the end of her journey. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
